Topic: Any SoundSwitch users? - Page: 1
Hi all,

Started using Virtual DJ a while ago. 2017 or so. Basicly to play my favorite music and backingtracks I use for performing. I once bought some lights and wanted to get rid of the automodes as they just wouldn't function. Then I discovered Freestyler, which was ok, synced pretty well to Virtual DJ, perfect actually. It always seemed to work.

In 2023 I discovered SoundSwitch. Amazing! First months never ran into problems, till this year. I wasn't always sure if the crashes that occured where always SoundSwitch related. The versions didn't support MyLists where quite stable.. but 2.8 wasn't really. I now updated to 2.9.1 and last night my lights would blackout. I use Control ONE as a DMX interface, and a Denon Prime GO as a backup source, whenever problems with my Laptop occur. But switching the Control ONE to the The Prime GO didn't even help during the black-out. Like Control ONE was causing the problem. Fortunately I was able to turn on some lights that hung in the room.. after a quarter or somehing, changing cables which didn't help light turned on again. And after I restarted SoundSwitch connection to Virtaul DJ failed. I'm at my wits end. My Control ONE was broke after a few months and repaired, but now I'm not so sure..

Posting issues on the SoundSwitch usergroup is pretty useless as negative messages got delete. within a few hours.
What are your experiences with the latest SoundSwitch updates? Has anyone experienced blackouts like described above with the last update 2.9.(1)?

I look forward to your positive experiences or any experiences at all. Thanks!

As a sort of test to be sure I just imported all tracks in my music folders in Virtual DJ again and created a new database. All tracks are scanned. Started SoundSwitch with virtual DJ active and the Virtual DJ folder (with the database located) added to the Browser path in SoundSwitch. SoundSwitch opens, selected edit mode, SoundSwitch closes inmeddiately.

I've noticed this more often. The close-downs are very random which makes it even harder to find possible reasons what is the cause. Really weird.

I use SoundSwitch (v2.8.4.0, I haven't upgraded to 2.9 yet as there was a connectivity bug with VirtualDJ that needed to be addressed) successfully with VirtualDJ.

I would say:

  • The default configuration that SoundSwitch comes with tries to read as many libraries as possible, and that included Serato as well. As soon as I turned off scanning for other libraries, performance improved drastically.
  • I've also had to set "os2l" to yes (it defaults to auto) to get consistent connectivity with SoundSwitch (on the same machine)
  • I've never experienced a crash switching to Edit mode, but note that Edit mode normally doesn't make the lights perform regularly, as it is expected that you are making changes to light shows in that mode in order to use those light shows in performance mode later. If it crashes switching to Edit mode, I think that is actually a problem, and you should look towards SoundSwitch tech support first for that.

Thanks sharing your experiences and tips DJ Vinyltouch! I was afraid for the update too. Did you notice the connection problems where taken care of in version 2.9.1? (see below).

I looked at the other hints, os2l and this was already on 'yes'.
I believe the recent versions of SoundSwitch don't allow to acces multiple DJ software. iTunes is a separate choice.

The closing down problem looks solved for now. After importing all tracks to a new Database, I still had the old Venue (with all scripted files) selected. Tonight I scripted all again which seemed to help. What I don't understand, my Database in Virtual DJ contains 21k items. and after scripting them in SoundSwitch there are 41k files. That's a double amount. Is this the same in your SoundSwitch folder?

Tbh I've never looked to see if duplication occurs for the tracks I scripted (it's confusing that that would even happen, as I would think all SoundSwitch does is read the database, not modify it). I'll run a quick trial once I get some time and get back to you on it.

Thanks!

Today SoundSwitch again close down immediately after selecting edit mode. It's a fresh installed laptop, which makes it even more of a mistery to me. There are even files in the SoundSwitch tracklist that aren't imported.

Support has contacted me also. Don't know if they will be able to help me.

I'm curious about your SoundSwitch folder, and its amount of files compared to the amount in the Virtual DJ database.

I use SoundSwitch up to date and I just had a gig with no issues, I am using an Alienware M15 laptop with Windows 11 ( I really hate Win 11 ), the entire playlist was prepared in advance, all the static looks as well ... knock in wood, zero issues so far!

I've checked...I've not experienced any duplication on tracks on my end in either database (VirtualDJ or SoundSwitch).

Thank you for sharing your positive user experiences. Hopefully I get things to work, and get rid of the problems.

I made a video about the 'closing down problem'. Occasionally it continues to work for a while, but lately it seems to be closing down very often. I seems I can't have the Virtual DJ folder with the Database located in the browser path in SoundSwitch.
This is a project folder with all files scripted tonight on this same computer I demonstrate this on. Even some files show a location errors.. Keeps happening all the time with some folders. Don't know why. They seem to be unwriteable. But they do exist in Virtual DJ..

I previously made a question about file management options in SoundSwitch.. which isn't really a possibility I think. As a workaround, I used Engine DJ to save about 500 files I invested time in (timeline tweaks in SoundSwitch) set those apart from the rest. I had about 55k of files. Most duplicates and a lot of samples for music production. So the projectfolder Engine DJ created, with the 500 files was used as a starting point.

I notices when Virtual DJ isn't active, the "close downs" seems to be less.. When I have to use SoundSwitch now with Virtual DJ, I don't adress the database in the browserpatch, which also seems to give more stability, and scripted files are still working fortunately. This is how I survived most of the evenings during the last months when I had to use some lights.

The Virtual DJ Database in the video below was created yesterday by importing all 21k music files, and after that, have them all scanned (BPM and grid) by Virtual DJ. About 21k tracks. After that started scripting the 20.5 tracks which didn't had a lighshow. The SoundSwitch folder contains 40k files after the scripting, This amount of files is a mystery to me. I tested the same before on another laptop and thought something went wrong there, but exactly the same story on this laptop.

I was a bit hard to determine details from the video due to the resolution, but yep, that crash problem is concerning and I think you should go to SoundSwitch's tech support with that. I also don't.see the duplication but I'm on Mac and a lower version (v2.8.4.0) - not sure if that could make a difference.

Thanks! I sent the same message to SoundSwitch together with the video. And got a reaction they will look at it. Just sent my Database, hopefully they'll discover what is wrong. I'm sure I'm not the only user with this problem.

Earlier tonight I started a test with my fresh created Database and new scipted files for SoundSwitch. excluding the Virtual DJ folder in the SounSwitch browser path made my setup work for 4,5 hours or so.
Upcoming weekend I will use the same set up. Prime GO as backup and computer.

oh.. I also discoved why there are much more files in the SoundSwitch folder. Since version 2.9 there seem to be 2 files for every database item. So this in not an issue with my setup.

I really appreciated your expernience. But do you also have your database added tot the browserpath in SoundSwitch? As you might've read, for some reason with Virtual DJ open and opening SoundSwitch, the program closes down.

What is the number of files in your Database. I thought this might be causing a problem too is there's too many of them. I got from 30k files to 20 after deleleting a lot of stuff. Imported all in a clean Database and scripted those file again. Still no luck.

Can't imagine there aren't more SoundSwitch users. Oh well. I seriously considering to start using the Wolfmix again, as last weekend brought nothing but troubles again. Blackout while performing (had to disconnect USB for the Wolffmix to make my lights working again). And SoundSwitch closed down when I started streaming a Deezer song (rest was on my harddrive (C). SoundSwitch is only distracting me.

I wouldn't be surprised more people stopped using it. Correct me if I'm wrong, and your Windows setup is rock steady.

So I've updated SoundSwitch to v2.9.1 on my MacBook (Sonoma 14.4) and was able to connect VirtualDJ (v2024-m b8350) successfully in Performance mode, and I've not experienced any crashes of either software on load/play. I admit that was not an extended session however (just about 30 minutes as I just updated today), so I'll put it through a longer session this weekend to be sure and report.

The doubling of files in the SoundSwitch folder might be an expeced thing - they have different file extensions and probably present different things (.ssa and .ssfile respectively).

I do notice autoscripting is hit or miss when multiple tracks are selected (I've selected a bunch for autoscripting and saw that one or two still weren't scripted after the batch script ran).

SoundSwitch has always worked for me whether it's with VDJ, Engine or using it in standalone with my Denon units.

A few times I've had some connection issues but the team here at VDJ got that all fixed.

I use it almost daily as when I practice at home I have a bunch of lights setup so I can actually see how everything is going to look when I'm mixing.

Loco has set me up with a skin that I can control everything in SS from within VDJ.

EVERYONE of my tracks in my ENTRIE library has been AUTO scripted and Im happy with the results. Its not really a plug and play program like they claim. There are different ways to setup lights and youll have to check things out so its not boring.

As for the autoscript, I've never had it NOT script a track unless it already had a script or it didnt have a beat grid in place so you might want to record that the next time it happens and send that info over to them.

Like I said, I've used SS since day 1!! I have the original box along with a CONTROL ONE.

After you take the time to learn it to learn the ins/outs its a super program. Sure there's a few things I wish I could change but that's with anything we use.

Oh and I'm on a M1 Macbook Pro

I think I've only seen one track randomly not be autoscripted (it was part of a batch I selected for autoscripting) with the current release (v2.9.1). Other than that, I've also had no release issues that weren't address quickly - connectivity was the only problem area I encountered and I didn't see that with the upgrade.

Thanks for sharing your experiences with SoundSwitch. It almost got me thinking I should switch to MAC (hehe) but one W11 user confirmed it is working without troubles.

I had my DJ rig active for a few days at home. Testing SoundSwith with one simple fixture and sometimes check the fixture if the program is still working or not closed. But troubles seem to occur more often when I am using the computer.

I had my Database sent over to SoundSwitch and they ask me to confirm if the program is not closing when exclude the Database. I explained this is the only way to survive an event since update 2.8 I think. But even now it is still not stable. I really would love to have it working as it did when I firs installed it. Never had any problems. I also checked my old W10 laptop, but it is on 2.8.4. Same behavior with the database added in the Browser path.

I really would love a stable setup. Perhaps I can try SoundSwitch 2.7, don't know.
The laptop I use is 2 or 3 months old now. No further programms installed but Virtual DJ, SoundSwitch, a virtual Midicable which is connected in the streamdeck app (also installed) for a Streamdeck 2.

I use this to select some static looks. Sometimes blackouts happen where autoscripted track has no light in the intro, the static looks are there to save me from the black-outs.

I just muted the virtual midi cable. SoundSwitch doesn't receive midi messages then but it doesn't help. SoundSwitch is still closing with the database in the browserpath.

Hopefully the SoundSwitch support team can help me out on this.

So you've just mentioned Virtual MIDI cable as a part of your setup - I'm pretty sure that's not required as a part of the default setup and probably means you may be doing something outside of the normal setup for both software packages.
Maybe you can share the complete details of your setup (it would help with shedding some light on what the problem is)?

I wrote: As a test I disabled it. And it doesn't behave any different with the Database accesable in SoundSwitch.

My just repared laptop (clean Windows 11, with only Virtual DJ and SoundSwitch installed) has no Streamdeck or Virtual Midi cable installed. Same behavior. Closing down with the database accesable in SoundSwitch.

I was just thinking, maybe because of the new file format (2 files for each track in 2.9), there could go something wrong? The SoundSwitch Project folder I use contains some tracks I invested edits in. About 500.
There is no proper way to set those apart from the automatic scripted tracks but I was able to use Engine DJ and save those 500 tracks into a Project folder for the Denon Prime GO which I use. When doing all over again (scripting and importing all tracks in Virtual DJ, sort of a clean start), Everytime, this was my starting point.

I have provided all this much information to SoundSwitch. You have been upgrading to 2.9 lately isn't it? I don't think those singular SoudSwitch files, created in previous versions should be a problem.

I think I even have been messing with a clean project folder for SoundSwitch too. Deleting all those songfiles, and having the specific files for settings saved (venue (where all the DMX channels are adressed), and some other files) and autoloops. Those should be backwards compatible as they where created in 2.7 and never had any problems in this version.

I don't think I have a previous version saved of 2.7. I might as well go back just to check things. MyLists where unaccesable in this version.. but I never had this worse amount of close downs in this version.
