Topic: CRSS12 Deck select
Hi,

Hopefully an easy fix to this, but thought I'd ask if anyone else has the same problem.

When using timecode as digital vinyl is the deck select button meant to allow you to control which ever deck you select? It doesn't for me and I feel like it should. It changes the pads to the correct deck but the timecode doesn't change with it.

Any thoughts?

Thanks
Bryn

CRSS-12 has 4 hardware layers.
The "DECK" button controls which HARDWARE layer is active.
Also since the unit does not send a "digital" signal to track and requires ANOTHER sound interface to be used, it's impossible for the software to know how to reroute the DVS inputs.
That's why it CANNOT change the controlled deck when you use the DECK button.

However, there's only one exception in this:
If you use only ONE unit to control all 4 decks. In that case, with the CRSS12 connected on your computer open VirtualDJ settings, click OPTIONS tab, and then the "CONTROLLER" button.
You should see a PLXCRSS12-singleUnitOperation setting on top of the list.
Set it to true.
This will enable the unit to reroute Timecode input 1 to whatever deck the unit has it's hardware layer currently set at.

If you are using two units, you are meant to permanently set each unit to a deck, and not cycle them around. At least that's how Pioneer intended this unit to behave.

Technically it is possible to use 4 decks with 2 units, but you'll also have to use your keyboard to reroute the DVS inputs "manually" (so that input 2 as an example switches from deck 2 to deck 4 and back to deck 2)

That's an excellent reply, thank you, it all makes sense.

Can you elaborate a bit more on how my keyboard can be used to switch between two dvs decks?

I would assume I can do something by editing the deck button midi script,?

NO. If you could, then official mapper would do that as well.

The problem is this:
Let's say that you have two units.
Each unit cycles the decks it can control like this 1->2->3->4->1 e.t.c.
This means that when you want to switch unit 1 that controls deck 1 to control deck 3, you have to "pass" from deck 2 first. However, deck 2 is controlled by unit 2.
You cannot have 2 units control the same deck with timecode, and of course you don't want to "switch" the timecode input of deck 2 (that most likely is playing live) to that of unit 1 (that most likely is not spinning or it's spinning with different pitch)
No matter how you try to solve this case, there's no real solution. Every time you try to switch decks, a unit will step on a deck controlled by another unit.

This can only be resolved OUTSIDE the CRSS12 itself.
You can use two keyboard shortcuts: invert_timecode 1 and invert_timecode 2 The numbers here don't correspond to decks, but to the actual timecode inputs on your sound setup.
This way (with the setting mentioned in the previous post turned off) you can cycle decks on each unit freely as this operation will not mess with timecode signal assignment.
Then, once you switch to the desired deck layer on your CRSS12, you can use the keyboard shortcut to take care of the timecode signal as well.
So, as an example, unit 1 steps over deck 2 on its way of becoming deck 3, but it does not move/change the timecode assignment at the same time. Therefore, deck 2 operation (still controlled by unit 2) does not get interrupted. When unit 1 reaches deck 3, you can toggle the timecode input to unlink from deck 1 and link to deck 3. That's what invert_timecode 1 does.

I hope it's more clear now.

That's perfect, makes absolute sense and I now have sorted what I need, thank you, your help is much appreciated.
