Topic: Will the Engine OS stems features be supported
I sometimes use my Numark Mixstream Pro in standalone mode with usb sticks or SD cards exported from VDJ to CDJ format, which EngineOS can read
This of course gives me Stems options on export, which means I can play for instance acapellas on the unit. This is done by simply loading that version as a track and play it
However more common stems use, like toggling stems on and off on the unit, haven't been possible because the unit hasn't been "stems aware". It has simply seen everything as tracks
That's about to change with Engines new support of pre computed stems. It looks like all the stems work will be done outside of the hardware, and the stems will be loaded onto the USBs- just like VDJ does it
So I'm assuming the only thing that will be changing in EngineOS it that it'll know how to see the exported stems as stems, and trigger them individually. So maybe we are just talking about minor changes to the export format?
Will VDJ be able to tap into this?
I guess as a minimum a change is needed in the export feature maybe combined with an option to switch between CDJ format and EngineOS format

+1

that would be great but with the VDJ stems which are better in quality.

Why don't you ask DENON to support VDJ stems, rather than asking VirtualDJ to support a feature that has not come yet ?

Because you guys answers when we ask :)

Yes we answer, but there's a point here that needs to be made.

VirtualDJ was the first DJ software to introduce stems.

So, it makes more sense to ask OTHERS and especially hardware manufacturers to support this feature, than the other way around. Especially since it's still considered that VirtualDJ has the best sounding stems among the industry.

People often complain that X,Y,Z controller doesn't work with VirtualDJ out of the box, or that X/Y/Z company doesn't seem to care about VirtualDJ.
Yet, when they have 100% valid points to let the hardware manufacturers that they need to support VirtualDJ and that they need/want the X/Y/Z feature (which at the moment happens to be the best in the industry) they still fail to raise their voice where it needs to be heard the most.
On the manufacturer that plans to support stems on his "stand alone" operation.

To be honest here, even if all the work is done by VirtualDJ, it would be easier and quicker to put some pressure on Denon in order to release info on how this "stems" feature is gonna work (kind of a SDK) rather than us having to wait for it to get released, then study it, then reverse engineer it, then test it, and finally implement it.

So, the point I'm trying to make here is not that you should put pressure on Denon and "expect" that they will support VirtualDJ stems.
But you should put some pressure on Denon for A) to release an SDK in time and B)in order for them to know that VirtualDJ has many and loyal fans that it's on their best interest to keep happy and have them as customers (and therefore pay VirtualDJ more attention)

PS: This has nothing to do with DENON itself as a brand. I would be making exactly the same point for any other brand as well (even Pioneer that has it's own Rekordbox app)

Wouldn't it be nice if all the DJ software and hardware could either understand each other's different stem formats, or that they all used the same format so it was cross platform?

No, of course just like their databases, they each do their own thing, and we get stuck in the middle, having to deal with the incompatible data.
[sad face]

Consider this: Only the Prime 4+ will be able to access these stems natively. Denon say that all other units require a $9.99 fee, so it's obviously not just a firmware update. Something is being "unlocked".

If the Denon files are encrypted until they see the "key" on the unit, then they're not going to be playable on anything else. This may explain why the stem files are not playable on the free EngineDJ desktop software.

I tried hacking one of the Denon stems files yesterday but couldn't get it to play. All I got was white noise. Seems it may be encrypted.

I'd be far happier if the VDJ stems I already have pre-computed could be played on the Denon hardware but I already tried the CDJ export route for my current files and it wasn't great.

I've had the misfortune of dealing with Denon (In-Music) support lately and it's dire.
