SETUP


Firmware & Drivers


Firmware : Update the firmware of the unit to the latest available version from https://www.native-instruments.com/en/support/downloads/drivers-other-files/

Drivers : No driver is required to be installed. The Traktor Kontrol S3 is a USB Class compliant device and your Operating system will automatically install the necessary drivers once the unit is connected to your computer via a USB port.

VirtualDJ 8 Setup


Download and install VirtualDJ from http://www.virtualdj.com/download/index.html (in case you have not done already)

Once VirtualDJ is opened, a Login Window will appear. Login with your virtualdj.com account’s credentials.

A Pro Infinity, a Pro Subscription or a Home Plus License is required to use the Traktor Kontrol S3 Without any of the above Licenses, the controller will operate for 10 minutes each time you restart VirtualDJ.

A detection windows will appear next verifying proper connection.

Select the Kontrol S3 button in order VirtualDJ to apply the pre-defined audio configuration (speakers need to be connected to the rear side of the unit in this case), or Computer if you don't have any speakers to connect to the Kontrol S3 and need to output sound from the default sound card of your computer.


Click to OK


The unit is now ready to operate.


MIDI Operation


The unit should be visible in the MAPPING tab of VirtualDJ Settings and the “factory default” available/selected from the Mappings drop-down list.



The factory default Mapping offers the functions described in this Manual, however those can be adjusted to your needs via VDJ Script actions.

AUDIO Setup


The unit has a pre-defined Audio setup and a special button in the AUDIO tab of VirtualDJ Settings to provide that.

MIXER CONTROLS






KEY

SHIFT (SECONDARY) ACTION

1 CROSSFADER
When on far left position, only sound from the left decks will be heard from the Master Output. When at far right position, only the sound of the right decks will be heard from the Master Output. In all other positions, the audio signals from left/right decks will be blend.
2 VOLUME
Adjust the Volume of each Mixer channel
3 CUE/PFL
Use these buttons to send the pre-fader audio signal of each mixer channel to the Headphones channel for pre-listening (connection at the front side).
4HEADPHONES VOL
Adjusts the level of the Headphones Output (connection at the front panel).
5HEADPHONES MIX
Blends the signal from the PFL-enabled Mixer channels and the Master Output in Headphones.
6 COLOR FX ON
Enable/disable the selected Color FX on each Mixer channel. When disabled, no Color FX will be applied, regardless the position of the FILTER knobs.
7 COLOR FX KNOB
Apply the selected Color FX to a Mixer channel. No Color FX is applied (off) when the knob is at the center/middle position
8 COLOR FX SELECT
Use these 5 buttons to select a pre-defined Color FX.
FX 1 : Reverb Color FX
FX 2 : Loop Roll Color FX
FX 3 : Noise Color FX
FX 4 : Cut Color FX
FILTER: High/Low-Pass Filter
9 EQ HIGH/MID/LOW
3-Band Equalizer. Use these knobs to cut/boost the frequencies of the Low(Bass) / Mid (Middle)/ High (Treble) Equalizer Band. No adjustment is made when the knob is at the middle/center position
10 GAIN
Use these knobs to adjust the pre-fader output level of each mixer channel When the knob is at the middle/center position, the track will be at zero dB level (or any other value set in zeroDB VirtualDJ Options)
11 EXT
Use this button to send the signal from the Microphone or AUX Input to Deck 4 as a Deck Line Input
Select which external audio source (Microphone - front connection, or LINE - rear connection) will be routed to the Input of the USB Audio Interface.
12 MASTER VOL
Adjust the level of the Master Output (connection at the rear panel).
13 BOOTH VOL
Adjust the level of the Booth Output (connection at the rear panel).

 

DECK CONTROLS

14 PLAY
Play-pause left/right assigned Deck
Plays-stutter left/right Deck from last paused position
15 CUE
When Deck is paused, sets a temporary Cue point and plays from that position while pressed.When playing, returns and stops to the previously set temporary Cue
Stops at the beginning of the track
16 DECK SELECT
Select Deck A / Deck C as Left Deck or Deck B/ Deck D as Right Deck.
17 JOG MODE
Toggle between Vinyl (led lit) and CD (led dimmed) modes.
18 GRID MODE
Sets jogwheel to Grid mode while pressed.
Re-analyze BPM and beatgrid (undo Grid manual adjusts)
19 JOGWHEEL
Touch-sensitive jogwheel to scratch, bend or adjust Beat grid.
When Vinyl mode is enabled, use the upper part of jogwheel to hold and scratch and the outer part to pitch-bend.
When Grid mode is enabled use the jogwheel to move the Beat-Grid in time.
Fast seek/search trough track
20 REV
When enabled, track will be playing in reverse and when disabled, track will resume playing forward from current position.
If Slip mode is enabled, track will be playing in reverse while the button is held down and when released, will resume playing forward from the position the track would have been if the reverse was never triggered.
21 FLX
Enable/disable Slip mode. When enabled, several actions such as Loops, Hotcues, scratching, reverse etc, will act temporary and when action is done, track will resume playing from the.position it would have been if the action was never triggered
22 KEYLOCK
Enable/disable Key-Lock (Master Tempo). When enabled, track will retain its Key when Tempo is altered
Select next available %range for the Pitch slider
23 SYNC
Press to match BPM and phase to the opposite deck (or Master-Deck if more than 2 are used)
Smoothly resets tempo to its original value
24 TEMPO
Adjust the Tempo of the playing track. When at middle position, track will be playing at its original tempo.
25 LOOP
Halves/doubles the size of the Loop
Push: Auto Loop. Press to enable/disable an Auto-Loop of the selected size in beats
Adjust the 2nd Parameter of the selected Pads page.
Push: No action
26 MOVE
When Loop is enabled, turn to move the loop backwards/forward in time by 1 beat per click.
Push: Reloop/Exit. Press to trigger the last enabled Loop. If in Loop, exit the Loop
Adjust the 1st Parameter of the selected Pads page.
Push: No action


 

BROWSER CONTROLS

Sets focus to the Folders List of Browser. If focus is in Folders list, open/close sub-folders.

Sets focus to the Songs List of Browser.
29 LIST
Sets focus to the Sideview List of Browser.
30 BROWSE
Scroll through files or folders.
Push to load the selected track in Browser to the Left/Right Deck.
Scroll fast (-/+10 files per click) through files or folders.
Push to toggle between Normal and Zoomed Browser views.
31 VIEW
Cycle through the available Sideview Lists (Automix, Sidelist, Karaoke, Sampler and Shortcuts)


 

PERFORMANCE PADS





The 8 RGB performance Pads offer different functionality depending on the selected mode and the assigned Pads page. See further details in VirtualDJ Manual - Pads

32 HOTCUE
Press this button to assign the 8 Pads to Hotcues page (led will be lit in white).
If in Hotcues, press again to set Pads to Saved Loops page (led will be lit green)
Press to set the 8 Pads to Loop Roll page(led will be lit in cyan)
33 SAMPLES
Press this button to assign the 8 Pads to Sampler page (led will be turned on white solid).
If in Sampler, press again to set Pads to KeyCue page (led will be flashing white)
Press to set the 8 Pads to Slicer page(led will be flashing fast in white)
34 PADS 1-8


Hold SHIFT down and then use the MOVE and LOOP encoders to adjust the Parameters of the selected Pads page (if available)

 

FRONT & REAR PANELS




Traktor Kontrol S3 - Rear panel


35 MASTER OUT - XLR
Use these connectors to connect your device on a PRO grade amplifier or self-powered (active) speakers. The level of this output is controlled from the MASTER knob at the top panel.
36 MASTER OUT - RCA
Use these connectors to connect your device on another mixer or consumer grade amplifier. The level of this output is controlled from the MASTER knob at the top panel
37 BOOTH OUT - TRS
Use these connectors to connect your device on a secondary amplifier or self-powered (active) speakers for booth monitoring. The level of this output is controlled from the BOOTH knob at the top panel
38 LINE IN D
Use these connectors to connect a line-level signal equipment.The signal of this input will be routed to the Input of the USB Audio Interface if the LINE led at the top panel is lit (via SHIFT+EXT) and can be routed to Deck D via the EXT button.
39 IOS
Not used from VirtualDJ
40 USB
Use a standard USB cable to connect Kontrol S3 with your computer.
41 DC IN
Connect the provided power supply unit. Make sure all other connections are done before connecting to power.



Traktor Kontrol S3 - Front panel


42 MIC D
Use this connector to connect your microphone . The signal of this input will be routed to the Input of the USB Audio Interface if the MIC D led at the top panel is lit (via SHIFT+EXT) and can be routed to Deck D via the EXT button.
43 PHONES 1/4" 1/8"
Use these connectors to connect your Headphones.The level of this Output is controlled from the Headphones VOL knob at the top panel.
